Carnival of GRADual Progress

Welcome to the 22nd edition of the Carnival of GRADual Progress! Here we collect posts by, for, and relevent to graduate students, then distill them into a nice, streamlined format. This month's posts focus on the job search, academic publishing, and teaching as a grad student.

Many grad students are negotiating the job market right now:
Pitse1eh at Backstage shares some information on letter of recommendation writing and job negotiation she received at a seminar on Gender in the Academy, and describes how much work is involved in applying for jobs.

For once you get the offer: newsocprof offers advice on job market negotiation, and there's a good thread at Sciencewomen on negotiation the illegal questions on an academic job interview.

For those with a ways to go still:
Pragmatic Idealist shares some dissertation advice, including a PowerPoint adapted from Charles Tilly on how to choose a dissertation topic. Also, a story by Scott Eric Kaufman indicates that finishing the dissertation does not necessarily mean the dissertation drama is over.

For those trying to get published:
A useful guide to getting your paper rejected, via Julep at Damn Dinosaurs. Alternately, you can look at Thom Brook's Five Secrets to Publishing Success. These tips are aimed at those who are still new to academic publishing.

And finally, in the advice for grad student category we have Bitch Ph.D on What I Wish I Knew: Graduate Student Teaching

Thanks for the link! And, I mean this sincerely, by misspelling my name you have put yourself in good company. (That sounds snarky, but it isn't! All the greats misspell my name. It's a requirement of greatness---which, I must admit, worries me sometimes.)

Oh good, then I'm well on my way to greatness. I would certainly like to be certified as dangerous by the David Horowitz Center for Freedom Fries and Apple Fritters.

I have the kind of last name that always gets misspelled, too. In fact, my husband just got his voter registration card in the mail today, and the gov't spelled his name wrong. Perhaps they should be certified as dangerous.

I am sure that you can tell that I am woefully behind at this point that I am just seeing this =) Thanks for the shout-out. I hope that writing is going well!
