Ha! I have attained the much-coveted "GEEK" status.

What if the normal rules of social interaction confound me on either a theoretical level or a practical level but not on both? How, then, do I answer that question? What if my ability to understand these rules is highly contextually dependent?

(I'd just much rather be called a Geek than a Nerd, in truth)

I use "dork" for someone who has an unconventional enthusiasm that is not tech-related.

I got "geek," which I think is applicable. I definitely think that "dork" has much stronger negative connotations than "geek," although I suppose how that affects one's evaluation of the nomenclature here might vary. I would also say that the clumsiness with rules of social interaction is an essential feature of dorkdom, at least as I have heard it applied in conversation. However, I think perception of childishness or immaturity rather than lack of intelligence per se might be another defining characteristic.

Of course, the other day I made some sort of comment about being a geek at the vet, and she said very seriously that I didn't LOOK like one. I'm not sure if this is basically equivalent with telling people that they are not fat or bald, or if there is some other assumed criterion of geekdom that I do not meet. Admittedly, I didn't make her listen to my theories about popular representations of sociobiological theory via Firefly.

@Carly - i think if you're confounded on a theoretical level, but can act appropriately nonetheless, you are merely a nerd who can 'pass' in mixed company. but you go ahead and call yourself whatever makes you happy ;)

@Jeremy - i would argue that the expression of unconditional enthusiasm is one form of departing from standard social conventions, and therefore your use of 'dork' is within my definition.

@Cabell - you have a point with the distinction between immaturity and intelligence. my intended meaning with the 'are you smart' was 'are you on the tail end of the intelligence distribution', so that one could be 'not smart' but also be 'not stupid'.
